Chapter 1 - Life Point

It was four thirty-six in the morning. Mildly gray snow flittered through the darkness beyond the single-pane windows of Jacob Kemp's seventh-floor apartment. Jacob stood at a grimy mirror, throwing a brown leather trench coat over his standard outfit consisting of a loose, black t-shirt and slightly tattered, navy cargo pants. A spike of smoky quartz about two inches long dangled from his neck by a leather cord. He hurriedly styled his military-short, black hair, before meandering to his kitchen. It was a short journey from one side of his one-room apartment to the other. He began to rummage through the cabinets.
